Good Evening Hikers! This adventure brings us back to the beautiful Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area! Our trail location for this trip is Honey Creek! Day-hikers and Backpackers are welcome.

Be sure to click this text -OR- the See More… link for the entire event description. All members are automatically invited to these events, so please ignore or click on Can’t Go if you are not able to participate!

There are plans for both types of hiking, so please review carefully. If you have a question about the difference between day-hiking and backpacking, you can visit our website FAQ at or just ask here for more information.

The Honey Creek Loop is the most challenging trail in Big South Fork. Along with the challenge come rewards for the hiker with the time and stamina to undertake the trip. Hazards include steep narrow trail sections, numerous creek crossings, slick boulders and confusing trail junctions. This hike is not recommended immediately following heavy rainfall or after severe freezing weather.

HIKE INFORMATION AND WARNING’S!

It is not likely that we will hike the entire loop of this trail. There is so much to explore at and around the Cumberland River, that we normally don’t have to go far for some fantastic adventure.

We will be taking the stairs down to the Cumberland River and setting up camp first thing. This is a one mile strenuous hike DOWN that will test your balance and skill. The access to our secret location in the area is more that a 70% grade and you will be on your butt to get there.

After setting up camp we will adventure on and off trail to explore Honey Creek, the Indian Rockhouse and Honey Creek Falls. This adventure will involve rock scrambling, river crossings, bouldering and narrow sections in dangerous areas.

This is a fur-baby friendly adventure! However be prepared to carry your animal down stairs, boulders, rocks slides, and extreme slopes. Know your dog’s limitations before trying to bring him or her. Liberty has hundreds of miles under her collar and can hike in just about any Tennessee terrain. BUT, she has to be carried down the stairs, so please keep that in mind. You and your dogs safety is my only concern!

Midlife Hiking Club will cover all permit costs related to backcountry camping for this event! Please let me know if you’re a backpacker or day-hiker. See below videos for information about location and itinerary!

If you are a day-hiker, please check out the day 1 itinerary as the main objectives will be completed during that day-hike! You have a option to exit the trail by hiking back the same route or taking an alternate trail. Please use your average pace to determine your abilities for completing this hike in one day.

Please use good judgment in taking the following into account:

Equipment– Trails here are often steep, rocky, uneven and slippery. Hikers should wear sturdy boots and carry a day pack with food, water, first aid supplies, rain gear, flashlight, cellular phone and trail map. Please do not attempt these trails wearing sandals, street shoes, flip flops or smooth-soled footwear.

Lightning– Peaks, ridges, ledges and shallow overhangs are all high-risk areas for lightning strikes. Stay alert for changing weather patterns (thunderstorms can arrive suddenly in the afternoon) and stay clear of risk areas in an electrical storm.

Hypothermia– A cold summer rain can be as dangerous as an arctic wind storm. Carry appropriate weatherproof garments, even in summer months.

Trail Conditions– Backcountry trails can be slick, muddy and treacherous. Upper trails in winter often glaze over with ice. Hiking under these conditions falls in the domain of well-equipped experts.

Water– All untreated water should be purified. Giardia, bacteria and other contaminants cannot be easily detected. You can purify water by boiling it for 10 minutes, by using purification chemicals or through use of a filtering device.

Watching Children– Adults should lead and follow their hiking groups with young children in the middle. If the hiking party decides to split up, make plans to rejoin at a prearranged time and place to avoid confusion and the possibility of after-dark searches for lost hikers.

Health Considerations– Hikers with breathing or heart conditions should be cautious of strenuous activity, especially at higher altitudes. In Case Of Emergency, Dial 911!
Remember this is the Southeast and the weather can change every 7 minutes. Be prepared for cooler nights, thunderstorms, rain, snow, sleet, hail, and icebergs just kidding of course, but be prepared for anything when hiking or backpacking! BRING PLENTY OF WATER.
