Trail Rating Information

MHC has decided that trail rating systems on some of the trails in the Southeast can be very deceiving and some people may abort their hike based on extra cautious ratings. We are not going to redesign the wheel. We are currently using the same formula that Hiking in the Smokey Mountains uses which was developed by Dick Holley and comes from the book Rocky Mountain National Park Dayhiker’s Guide by Jerome Malitz.

This formula’s result assumes you are an average hiker with average physical skills. You should judge your own personal abilities and only use a rating system as a baseline for trail difficulty.

The formula is as follows:

( 0.002 x elevation gain [in feet] ) + round trip distance [in miles]

The formula adds a score of 1 for each 500 feet of elevation gain, and an additional score of 1 for each mile walked.

There are so many factors that determine how hard a hike is perceived. Trail conditions for the season, trail width, blazing, wildlife and of course your physical ability. We have an additional rating or class for trail that covers a climbing and blazing aspect of the trail. You can see that rating system and it’s description here.

The combination of the two type of rating systems should give you an idea of trail difficulty. If you ever have any questions or comments about rating, please feel free to contact me.
