Wearing a Backpack

There are a number of techniques for wearing your backpack correctly and I’ve been through several of them. This newer more commonly practiced technique, designed by Gregory Packs, seems to work best and helps aid in proper comfort on the trail.

It was always my understanding that wearing a backpack required you to do a number of steps in the proper order: 1. Have someone hold your pack up or raise it up and adjust your hip belt, then shoulder straps, then sternum straps, then load lifters. Guess what, its not really the best way to do it. You spent the time to measure your torso and hips and bought the right pack for your body, so the following technique should apply when putting on your pack.

  1. Very important first step is to have the right pack for your body. I cannot stress how important this step is when making a pack purchase. You can follow our guide to determine your hip and torso size and any reputable dealer will be able to size the pack exactly right with those measurements.
  2. Pick up your pack by the handle on the back side and support it on your bent leg as you place your arms into the shoulder straps. The handle is designed to support the weight of the entire pack. Continued slinging of the shoulder straps can cause them to break or pull out of the pack (bad news on the trail).
  3. Center the pack on your body and pull the shoulder straps tight, which in turn will raise your backpack to the proper location on your back. Leave the hip belt unbuckled as you do this step.
  4. Now shrug your shoulders, like you just don’t care and leave them shrugged. Clip your hip belt and BAM your pack is 1″ above the Illiac as it’s supposed to be. Notice that the shoulder harness is wrapped around the entire shoulder with no gaps.
  5. Whether the joint or bone pain is caused due to any injury or arthritis, it can only be treated by orthopedic spehttp://deeprootsmag.org/2013/07/23/blues-as-biography/ viagra pills onlinets. 6. Lastly, hook up your sternum strap and adjust your load lifters. The load lifters will pull the pack to your body.

That’s it. This style of putting on your backpack has worked out best for me. If you did not follow step one and have a pack that is not designed for your body, then scrap this and pray that you’re not hiking very far.

The following YouTube video from Gregory Packs is a good example of how to follow this technique:
