Features

Overview

The primary feature or destination on this trail is the Litton Farmstead and can be reached either via the road in a clockwise direction or the preferred trail counter-clockwise. You will also witness incredible geological features and small waterfalls along the way, as you do with most Big South Fork trips. The John Litton-General Slaven farm provides a glimpse of the subsistence lifestyle once so common in the Big South Fork. The story of this farm began in 1901 with the John Litton family and ended with General Slaven and his family in October 1979, when the National Park Service purchased the land.

Description

This is an easy loop trail leading to the Litton Farmstead. Traditionally hikers will travel counter-clockwise to reach the farm at about 3.6 miles from the trailhead. The are several water crossings however most, if not all of them, have bridges built. They are in need of some repair, so watch your step and go one at a time.

We started the day off a little later than planned and even added more time making a bad decision at the beginning of the hike. The trailhead is a little misleading, however if you stick with your gut and follow the road to your LEFT, you will be on the correct trail. The track file and trailhead location are correct so you can trust them if you decide to use your GPS.

The trail starts off and continues down a well maintained path leading you through some geological rock houses and walls with signs of significant erosion over many years. There is evidence of former rock slides that helped carve this area into what it is today. You’ll follow the creek for the entire hike and should have no issue with water should you need it. Remember to treat all water at Big South Fork!

You will arrive at Fall Creek Falls about 2 miles in. This waterfall is a little rock drop in the creek and has access to the base and top for those inclined to explore it closely.

We made this hike in very early spring (false spring) and did not witness a lot of new growth other than the traditional hearty breeds like pine and fern. I would recommend making this trip in middle spring for even more beauty along the trail.

at about 3 and half miles you arrive at the Litton Farmstead and should take some time to eat lunch and just enjoy this historical landmark on the trail. You can find more information about the Litton Farm here. Ben Garrett has some great descriptions of the area and some interesting waypoints that we missed on our trip out there!

You finish up the journey by following the road back to the trail head for about a mile and half. I would recommend this hike and destination for families of any age or size. The falls are worth the little effort it takes to get there!
