Midlife Hiking @ North Old Mac Trail Overlook & Campsite

Snake Stepper and I headed out after work on Friday and drove to the Site #6 at the Front-woods campground in Frozen Head. For a campground, this place is pretty quiet and decent sized sites to accommodate larger groups. Luckily there were enough trees to hang our hammocks. Ski showed up about an hour later and setup her tent. We decided against a fire, since most of the wood was picked over the summer months. We just sat around and chatted until around 11 and headed to bed.

The next morning we got up early and prepared for the arrival of our two newest members Angela and Darrell. They arrive on-time and we all made our way to the Panther Branch Trailhead. We were surprised and happy to see Ted had come out for the day-hike portion of the hike. We made the small hike to Panther Branch Camp and setup our tents and hammocks.

After leaving the campsite we returned to the Emory Gap Trail and visited the completely dry Emory Waterfall. Even with no water there were still some really nice rock formations. After hanging out for a bit we hiked back to the campsite and made preparation for rain. Everyone made a decision to go ahead and climb up the mountainside and visit the overlook at

The hike up Panther Branch Trail can really test your legs and heart. It’s a pretty extreme ascent, so be ready to take some

breaks and enjoy the views. Once at the top you will turn right onto North Old Mac and follow a little spur trail to the unmarked overlook and campsite. The views are stunning from this location. Take some time and enjoy the peace and quiet.

I would recommend this section of North Old Mac, Panther Branch and Emory Gap trails to anyone getting into hiking. These trails will let you get a taste of different terrains and hiking styles, without totally kicking your butt.
