Trail/Park Official Description
The Ramsey Cascades Trail gains almost 2200 feet in elevation over its four-mile course, and is considered to be a moderately strenuous hike. However, hikers should note that the trail travels over some extremely rugged terrain over the last third-of-a-mile or so, making this a fairly difficult hike. Despite this, the waterfall is still a very popular destination, and you should expect to see a fair amount of hikers along the route during peak tourist seasons. (From Hiking The Smokies)
Midlife Hikers Review
Anyone visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park should add this trail to your adventure. The Greenbrier Area of the Mountains seem untouched and less commercial than the other ‘popular’ spots. Don’t be complacent about this hike. It’s not your everyday, run of the mill, jaunt through the woods. Be prepared for a tough hike, with steep grades, rocks, roots and scrambling. We rate this hike as 12.82 for good reason. The last 1/3 of the hike will test your body and will. Bring appropriate gear and supplies!
The earned view at the end is worth the struggle. This forest has some of the tallest trees in the park and beautiful untouched scenery. The cascades are the largest waterfall in the park and you will not be disappointed! Please allow yourself a minimum of 1 hour per mile and be prepared for breaks along the way. This hike can be completed in a day with a good amount of time at the waterfall.
Overall this hike is one of my favorites, due to toughness of it and beautiful landscapes in the area. I would recommend any hiker to try it out, but be wary of the requirements to complete this hike. It’s an incredible journey!
