Midlife Hikers Review

frozen_head_tripWe decided on this easier backpacking trip to break in our new hammock sleep systems. We needed something easy to hike in and out, just in case we had some gear failure. This area is truly beautiful and we were shocked at how nice this park actually is. It’s a little secret gem so close by.

We started out after work on Friday May 29th to get into our front-woods base-camp at the campground. Camping at the campground costs $13.50 for standard sites and these site are huge. We could have placed about 6 tents or hammocks at our location. We chose site #15, close to the bathhouse and park amenities.

Took a pleasant night by the fire and just relaxed until heading out on Panther Branch Trail in the morning. I awoke early as always and started my coffee while Liberty and I walked around this unique little campground.

IMG_6738We packed up around 9am and headed to the trail-head. It was just a short drive and we were on our way. Several people at the trail-head and it looked like it was going to be busy. Liberty in her normal fashion, greeted everyone and wanted to be the center of attention.

The trail is wide and extremely well maintained with little to no hiking issues. Debord Falls was our first stop. It’s a pretty small waterfall in comparison to some of the goliath’s  we’ve seen in the past, but very beautiful nonetheless. There is an overlook and a set of steps to get to the bottom of the falls and wade around a bit.

IMG_6758Our next location was at our campsite. This back-country campsite requires registration at the park office during normal business hours. If you arrive at the park after-hours you can use the outdoor registration box. I do recommend talking with someone though, they plan the reservations pretty good and you can avoid coming across occupied sites. The Panther Branch Branch campsite was truly amazing for back-country. Places to sit, a table for food prep, easy water source and plenty of space for any type of back-country camping.

After camp setup and some scavenging for wood we headed out to Emory Gap IMG_6766Falls, our destination for this trip. The falls were really nice with plenty of water features and rock houses directly next to it. I am really impressed with this part of the park. It is well traveled but still gives you a feeling of being really remote!

After the falls we went back to camp and enjoyed a great evening with SoB and Go Girl. We called it an early night around 11pm to the sound of the creek and wildlife around us.

We woke up early, broke down camp and headed back to the trailhead to end this trip. I would recommend this easy adventure for any skill level. If you have someone that is on the fence about backpacking bring them out here for a nice relaxing, close to nature experience!
